Comparison of the Efficacy of Vaginal Misoprostol with and without Laminaria in Second Trimester Induction Abortion
Background & Aims: Therapeutic abortion in the second trimester pregnancy is the choice treatment in cases with severe anomalies or intrauterine fetal death. It can be done by a number of medical (e.g. misoprostol) or mechanical methods (e.g. laminaria). The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of misoprostol alone and misoprostol in combination with laminaria in the induction of secon...
متن کاملParacervical block for pain control in first-trimester surgical abortion: a randomized controlled trial.
OBJECTIVE Despite lack of efficacy data, the majority of first-trimester surgical abortions are performed with a paracervical block. Women may be unnecessarily exposed to a painful injection and potentially noxious medication. Our objective was to estimate the effect of a paracervical block and the effect of gestational age on patient pain perception. METHODS This was a randomized, single-bli...
متن کاملStreptococcus milleri and second trimester abortion.
Review of 214 fetal necropsies performed in the department of pathology, University of Aberdeen, showed 40 cases of chorioamnionitis or intrauterine pneumonia, five of which were associated with Streptococcus milleri. In two cases there was good evidence to implicate S milleri as the cause of infected abortion while in the other cases its pathogenic role was less clear.
متن کاملLabor induction abortion in the second trimester
Labor induction abortion is effective throughout the second trimester. Patterns of use and gestational age limits vary by locality. Earlier gestations (typically 12 to 20 weeks) have shorter abortion times than later gestational ages, but differences in complication rates within the second trimester according to gestational age have not been demonstrated. The combination of mifepristone and mis...
متن کاملCervical dilation before first-trimester surgical abortion (<14 weeks' gestation).
First-trimester surgical abortion is a common, safe procedure with a major complication rate of less than 1%. Cervical dilation before suction abortion is usually accomplished using tapered mechanical dilators. Risk factors for major complications in the first trimester include increasing gestational age and provider inexperience. Cervical priming before first-trimester surgical abortion has be...
